The Rambagirakawa women's group was formed in 2012 with full support from the Dukunde Kawa cooperative in the Gakenke District in Northern Rwanda. Rambagirakawa means "professional women owning and growing coffee trees." There are currently 70 female members of this expanding group. The cooperative supports these members through farmer training programs, site collector training programs and several women focused initiatives, including a new building specifically built for the Rambagirakawa group. In addition to these educational and social programs, the cooperative continues to improve quality control with the use of their state-of-the-art cupping lab and investment in new processing, sorting, and drying equipment.

Impact:

The group supports a number of gender equity initiatives, including a program called Days for Girls. The Rambagira women started this project in early 2019 to provide feminine hygiene supplies to school-age girls and other members of the surrounding community who otherwise do not have access these products. A generous donor paid for the supplies for the 800 “kits” already sewn by the women and distributed to their community.

This is the first time we’ve carried coffee from this group and we are excited to have such an amazing coffee available in the Marketplace. The Rambagirakawa has many of the classic elements of high quality Rwandan coffee with a sparkling acidity, juicy body, and layers of sweetness. Roasted lighter, this coffee is bright and almost effervescent, with notes of tamarind, honey, kumquat, and key lime. Darker roasts pull out more body and deeper layers of sweetness with notes of date, brown sugar, maple and dark chocolate. A versatile coffee, the Rambagirakawa is excellent as a lighter roasted pour over and also works very well as a darker roasted single-origin espresso.
